Exploring Use of Force at Lewiston PD's Citizen Academy

Exploring Use of Force at Lewiston PD's Citizen Academy

Week three of the Lewiston Police Department's 19th Annual Citizen Police Academy carried a bit of excitement, as a mock shooting had the classroom recollecting what exactly happened.

We debated how many shots we heard, how many suspect(s) there were, what the officer told the suspect(s), and what exactly we saw as we looked out the window of the "restaurant" through the flashing police lights. It was interesting to learn how so many ears and eyes can present different viewpoints of a crime scene.

Personally, I heard six shots and I was wrong. There were actually seven simulated shots. As far as seeing anything, I saw flashing lights, reflections of my classmates in the "restaurant" windows, and a bit of movement "outside." It was all part of the third installment of the 11-week class which focused on the Use of Force and Technology.

Using force is not something officers like to do, but in some cases it is necessary to ensure the protection of not only the officer, but the suspect and the public.

2012 Kids' Art Contest

2012 Kids' Art Contest

It's time for the kids to sharpen their colored pencils. The 2012 Kids' Art Contest is underway. The winner of this competition will have their work displayed on 3.5 million voter pamphlets sent to people across the State.

The Office of Secretary of State is hosting the contest asking 4th and 5th graders to enter their best work. "If I Could Vote" is the theme for this year. The State says the contest is a chance for Washington's youngest citizens to get involved with the elections process.

The winner's work will be featured on Washington State Voter's Pamphlets and will receive a surprise visit from Secretary of State Sam Reed at school.

Students can enter their work here. Good luck! Artists have until April 16th to submit their entries.

Good idea? Connecting politicians with citizens on Google Hangouts

Here’s an idea - Google Hangouts with citizens and local politicians. It’s another way to talk face to face over great distances. Some selected Google+ users had the rare opportunity to ask questions to President Barack Obama in a video chat on Monday. Reuters' Anthony De Rosa explains:

He answered questions about the economy, job creation, small business, and the use of drones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama referenced a New York Times story on the use of drones, which he called “overwritten,” and said that the use of drones had not resulted in an unusual number of civilian casualties. Asked about the anti-piracy legislation that set the Internet on fire, Obama said, ”When SOPA came up on the hill, we expressed some concerns about the way the legislation had been written.”

Disney's Beauty And The Beast In Spokane

Disney's Beauty And The Beast In Spokane

I've had "Tale as Old as Time" in my head all morning long, and see visions of elaborate costumes and a lavish set when I close my eyes.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" opened last night at the INB in Spokane.  People, old and young, packed the house.  My 9 year old daughter and I were among those filling the seats.

The show started at 7:30, and ran for about 2 and a half hours, with a 20 minute intermission.  Although it was past her bedtime at intermission, she wouldn't hear of leaving early.

If you've seen the Disney movie, you know the show and the songs (with a few extras added).  If you've never seen it, you're in for a brand new experience.

So, the folks with Best Of Broadway ask you to "Be Our Guest".  There are a weekend full of shows at the INB for times and ticket information, click here

Radio news director attends "citizen" police academy

Radio news director attends "citizen" police academy

As a radio news director, listening to a scanner for a dozen hours or more a day is commonplace. And living in the Lewis-Clark Valley, it means listening to the activities of several agencies throughout the five-county area, including the Lewiston Police Department.

It was with giddy excitement that I signed up to take part in the agency's 19th Annual Citizen Police Academy so I could get a better understanding of the daily operations of one of the agencies which is a constant source for news purposes.

The 11-week class meets Tuesday nights for three hours each and includes area residents who either are interested in a career in law enforcement or are just curious as to the inner workings of a police department. Each class is lead by Corporal Eric Kjorness, with input from other department employees.

Aren't you glad it's the weekend?

Playing "Mom" on a Snowy Morning

Playing "Mom" on a Snowy Morning

Snowfall in Lewiston is making life a little busy for some. Mia Carlson, 97.7 FM news director, had to come to the rescue when her daughter, 19, needed a ride to work in the Lewiston Orchards area. Weather conditions may make some young drivers a little nervous, but for "Mom", her truck eats up the snow.

Carlson says it's still snowing steadily with a few slide-offs reported throughout the region.

"Nothing major yet as far as accidents. People just need to slow down because there is a sheet of ice underneath the snow," Carlson said. She added, "It rained before it snowed last night."
