New artist co-op opens in Downtown Lewiston | Arts & Culture
A new artist Cooperative has opened in downtown Lewiston. The Creative Shop is located at 301 Main Suite 101 in Morgan's Alley. STUDIO 2O2 is located upstairs and will be the location for many different classes offered by The Creative Shop.
According to artists associated with the co-op, it is an "autonomous visual arts organization that is owned and democratically controlled." The co-op provides professional facilities and services for its artist-members, including studios, workshops, equipment, exhibition galleries, and educational resources. By design, all economic and non-economic benefits and liabilities of the cooperative are shared equally among its members.
There are approximately 15 artists involved in varying capacities along with numerous community supporters, including Myndie VanHorn-Kernan, who says she envisions the co-op to be a place that she can show her art, learn new forms of art from other members, and have a cooperative that she can draw on for inspiration. "I look for it to be a very diverse group of people with diverse personalities that will enlarge my view of art."
Founder and President Kelsey Grafton added, “One of the things that we see the co-op doing is cultivating a buying atmosphere for art in the Valley along with educational and collaborative arts opportunities.”
Other artists in the region can participate: "We have several different ways that artists can get involved. For more information on this either contact us via Facebook at The Creative Shop & STUDIO 2O2 or email@example.com for more information."
The public will get a chance to learn more during Beautiful Downtown Lewiston’s Art Walk on Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
