Mother faces jail time for spanking son 80 times | News
A 34-year-old Clarkston woman pled guilty yesterday to misdemeanor 4th-degree criminal mistreatment in connection with the spanking of her 10-year-old son with a wooden paddle last May.
According to Clarkston Police, Marjorie Young spanked the boy 80 times as a punishment because he would not do his homework. The boy was being homeschooled at the time.
Young, who was originally charged with 2nd-degree assault-domestic violence, was sentenced to 90 days in jail with credit for one day served, and the rest suspended. She was also given unsupervised probation and must pay fines in the amount of $2,240, according to court officials.
A neighbor called police at about 9:00 p.m. on May 30th to report they had heard the sounds of "loud smacking" and the boy crying out at a residence in the 800 block of 7th Street.
"The mother had counted each spanking and told officers the number was 80," Police Chief Joel Hastings said previously.
