N. Idaho principal resigns after weekend arrest

A northern Idaho high school principal has resigned following a drunk driving arrest.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that Rolland Sullivan resigned last weekend as principal of Kamiah High School.

The Kamiah School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday accepted the resignation that will take effect at the end of the school year.

Police say Sullivan was arrested Friday in Kamiah and that he failed a field sobriety test, and refused to take a breathalyzer test. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Lewis County Magistrate Court to driving under the influence.

Kamiah School District Superintendent Fred Mercer says Sullivan did not list a reason for his resignation. Mercer says Sullivan has been the school's principal for five years.

School principal charged with DUI

A Kamiah school official is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Lewis County Magistrate Court on a charge of misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Kamiah High School principal Rolland "Rollie" Sullivan was arrested late Friday night after law enforcement was dispatched to a gas station in the 400 block of Third Street at 10:50 p.m. for a report of an intoxicated driver.

Kamiah Marshal Joe Newman says the responding officer witnessed several traffic infractions take place and pulled Sullivan over. He says Sullivan failed the field sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test, and was transported to the Lewis County Jail.

World War II vet receives medals after 68 years

A World War II veteran from Lapwai has received a Bronze Star 68 years after the war ended.

Dwight Staley was presented the medal this month at an American Legion ceremony.

Staley is now 87. He was in Okinawa, Japan, during the final months of the battle for the Pacific at a time when more than a quarter of a million people died.

His son-in-law, David Morton, says he knew Staley was entitled to the Bronze Star, a Presidential Unit Citation and other service medals he never received.

The Lewiston Tribune reports Morton wrote to the national records center in St. Louis and he was told many records were destroyed in a 1972 fire.

Morton then spoke to someone at Army headquarters and the medals arrived eight months later.

National Drug Take Back Day

National Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, April 27th, police departments across the region will be hosting drug collections as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's fifth National Drug Take Back Day.

The DEA has collected over 1,000 tons of unused and expired prescription drugs over the last three years. The take back day was started to get the public more involved in the prevention of prescription drug abuse.

Unused prescription drugs in homes are considered a public health and safety concern by the DEA. According to the DEA this is because the drugs are “highly susceptible to accidental ingestion, diversion, misuse and abuse”.

A survey done by the DEA found that the majority of abuses get their prescription drugs through friends and family. Often times it's as simple as raiding the medicine cabinet. Americans currently abuse more prescription drugs than those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined.

Oregon man dies in fall from deck at N. Idaho home

Police in northern Idaho say an Oregon man has died after falling from a second-story deck at a home in Lewiston.

Lewiston police say Timothy J. Yahtin, 42, of Warm Springs, Ore., died Tuesday from head and neck injuries after the 12-foot fall.

Lewiston Police Capt. Roger Lanier tells the Lewiston Tribune that Yahtin was taken by ambulance to a local hospital at about 7:30 p.m. where he was pronounced dead.

Lanier says Yahtin went onto the deck during a gathering of friends, and that another individual later found him at the bottom of the railing.

Lanier says there is no sign of foul play and no autopsy is scheduled.
