Asotin Co. names 4-H coordinator

The Asotin County 4-H coordinator position has finally been filled.

After interviewing five candidates, officials say Kim Belanger was selected for the position. She started the job on Monday.

"She is a WSU employee, with salary being contributed by Asotin County. Her primary hours will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; but could vary due to evening meetings and fair priorities," according to the WSU Asotin County Extension Office.

LCSC business students once again helping public with tax returns

 

LEWISTON, Idaho - Students in the Lewis-Clark State College Business Division are offering free assistance to help residents of the Lewiston-Clarkston area with 2012 tax returns.  The college has been offering the service for eight years.

The students are participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. They are trained in using material from the IRS, including IRS software, to complete tax forms.  The students went through LCSC Associate Professor Randy Eriksen’s two tax courses prior to this semester.  The students then took part in an IRS clinic and passed an IRS-sponsored exam.

The students are offering tax assistance on Tuesdays through April 15, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 12, located in the basement of the LCSC Administration Building.  The assistance is open to all and students are trained to help with nearly all forms and schedules.  Those seeking help will need to bring copies of their W-2, 1098, and 1099 forms, along with their tax ID number. Walk-ins are welcome or people can call (208) 792-2426 to set up an appointment.

Student hit by car getting off bus, hospitalized

A juvenile was transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center this afternoon following a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident at about 3:11 p.m. 

According to Clarkston Superintendent Darcy Weisner, the unidentified student had stepped off of a school bus at 13th Street and 20th Avenue and was struck by a vehicle that was passing on the right.

The bus had its flashers and sign engaged, Weisner says.

Agencies appeal citations relating to fire death

OROFINO, ID - The Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association and U.S. Forest Service have both appealed a citation handed down last month by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a result of an investigation into the death of a USFS firefighter. 20-year-old Anne Veseth of Moscow was killed on August 12 while fighting the Steep Corner fire near Orofino after trees crashed down around her in what is called a "domino" effect.

U.S. Department of Labor Regional Director of Public Affairs Deanne Amaden says all three agencies will work together "in good faith to reach a settlement." The total proposed penalty is $14,000 in fines for what are considered to be "serious" violations.

N. Idaho deputy fired after second DUI charge

A Nez Perce County Sheriff's deputy has been fired after receiving a second charge of driving under the influence following a guilty plea to a previous DUI charge in 2011.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that Jay Colvin, 38, was fired Thursday.

Nez Perce County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Scot Gleason says Colvin was fired after an internal investigation.

Colvin in 2011 was sentenced to probation and community service for drunken driving following his guilty plea.

In January an Idaho State Police trooper arrested Colvin in Lewiston after the trooper said he saw Colvin failing to signal during a lane change and his blood alcohol level tested at 0.123 percent and 0.134 percent.

Colvin has pleaded not guilty in Magistrate Court to that charge.

Clarkston, Colville DOL to no longer offer driver knowledge and skills test

CLARKSTON, WA - As of March 18, driver knowledge and skills tests will no longer be offered at the Clarkston Department of Licensing office. According to a news release, Clarkston is one of 11 towns across the state that will stop offering the service as part of a "continued expansion of the program that allows driver training schools and school district driver training programs to conduct driver knowledge and skills testing for new driver license applicants." The other towns are: Forks, Port Townsend, Hoquiam, Ilwaco, Shelton, Goldendale, Oroville, Coulee Dam, Republic, and Colville.

Nez Perce Sheriff's Deputy fired after second DUI

A Nez Perce County Sheriff's Deputy who was arrested in January for his second driving under the influence charge in two years has been terminated.

Nez Perce County Chief Deputy Scott Gleason has confirmed that Jay Colvin, 38, was fired yesterday. He had been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

An Idaho State Police Trooper pulled Colvin over for a traffic infraction in Lewiston, and he subsequently failed sobriety tests. Colvin pled not guilty in Lewiston's Magistrate Court for the January 28th misdemeanor offense. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for March 7.
